Bog oak – also known as Myreik – is a truly special material with a history stretching back thousands of years. The wood has been preserved in peat bogs, where natural processes involving minerals, pressure, and low-oxygen conditions have made it darker, harder, and more compact than regular oak.
The result is a unique handle material with a deep, dark color that can range from shades of brown to almost black. The color and structure are a direct result of being submerged in bog for a very long time, giving each blank its own distinct expression – no two are alike.
This blank has been stabilized with resin, which further enhances its properties. The stabilization makes the material more resistant to moisture, temperature fluctuations, and cracking, while also providing increased strength and predictability during crafting. The result is a handle material that combines nature's own process with modern technology.
