O1 is a classic oil-hardening tool steel that is popular among knifemakers due to its combination of wear resistance, good edge stability, and relatively simple heat treatment.
The steel is supplied precision-ground with flat and even surfaces. This reduces the need for surface grinding and saves a lot of time during processing. This makes the material particularly well-suited for stock removal, where the knife blade is sawn or ground directly out of the steel plate.
