The blanks are water-stained to make the pattern clearer than when dry, but it gives a relatively poor impression of the pattern compared to how it will be finished. The wood happily accepts a nice finish. Imagine how good it will be on the finished product!
The blank is selected by a professional rifle stock selector, to say the least an experienced man with decades of experience in the field. He goes through literally tons of walnut every year to select the best sections and selects and saws them into blanks.
